Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of digitalization in climate mitigation and adaptation for long-term road planning. It highlights the importance of strategic material selection and data-driven project management, emphasizing the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and advanced data integration techniques. The study introduces a novel digital framework for pavement life cycle assessment, which encompasses the entire project lifecycle from design to demolition. This framework facilitates the early detection of potential issues, optimizes resource deployment, and enhances the overall sustainability of infrastructure projects. The chapter also discusses the challenges and gaps in current practices, such as the absence of real-time material availability connection and a comprehensive single platform for holistic analysis. It proposes solutions to these challenges, including a material platform that automates life cycle carbon footprint and cost analysis, and a digitized project workflow that supports informed decision-making. The study underscores the significance of visualizing LCA results and integrating climate risk screening to enhance climate resilience in road infrastructure.
