Abstract

The article explores the persistent challenge of food insecurity in Cameroon, despite concerted efforts by policymakers to reduce poverty and hunger. It highlights the stark disparities between urban and rural areas, with rural households experiencing significantly higher levels of food insecurity. The study employs a innovative three-component decomposition model to analyze the evolution of food poverty from 2001 to 2014, focusing on the contributions of intra-zonal growth, intra-zonal redistribution, and inter-zonal mobility. The research reveals that while economic growth has been positive, its impact on poverty reduction has been limited due to unequal distribution of economic gains. The article also underscores the critical role of geographic mobility and redistribution policies in mitigating food poverty. By examining the interplay of these factors, the study provides valuable insights for policymakers seeking to design effective interventions to address food insecurity in Cameroon. The empirical findings are based on nationally representative data from the Cameroon Household Consumption Surveys, ensuring a robust and comprehensive analysis. The article concludes with policy recommendations aimed at enhancing food security and improving the well-being of vulnerable populations.
