Abstract

The article introduces a two-stage behavioral model for lane changes in diverging areas, focusing on mandatory lane changes. It considers vehicle motion fluctuations and validates the model using both observed and simulated traffic data. The model delineates the two stages of mandatory lane-changing behavior and incorporates time-headway and distance-headway constraints. It also expresses lane-changing probability based on vehicle movement characteristics, reflecting the dynamic adaptability of the subject vehicle. The performance of the model is evaluated and verified through extensive simulations, comparing traffic characteristics at micro and macro levels. The study highlights the importance of considering real-world data in validating traffic simulation models, ensuring that the model accurately reflects the complexities of traffic flow in diverging areas.
