Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical issue of regenerative chatter in machining processes, focusing on the role of cut thickness. The authors challenge the widely accepted formula for calculating cut thickness, arguing that it fails to account for the dynamic nature of chip formation. Through detailed analysis and physical modeling, they demonstrate that the actual cut thickness varies over time, even in the absence of phase shear. The chapter also explores the relationship between the period of vibration waves on the cutting surface and the oscillation of the shear plane length, highlighting the resonance conditions that lead to maximum vibration. The authors conclude that the conventional theory underestimates the complexity of regenerative chatter and propose a more accurate model for predicting vibration dynamics. This chapter is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the intricacies of machining vibrations and improve the efficiency and quality of machining processes.
