Abstract

The chapter addresses the challenge of mitigating flow-induced noise in automotive and aircraft cabins, focusing on the use of micro-perforated structures (MPPs) as a lightweight solution. It discusses the effectiveness of MPPs in absorbing and reducing the transmission of boundary layer noise, particularly under low-speed flow conditions. The authors present analytical models and experimental methodologies to predict the acoustic performance of MPPs, highlighting the influence of flow parameters and MPP constitutive parameters. The chapter also includes a detailed analysis of the interaction between a turbulent boundary layer and MPPs, supported by wind-tunnel experiments and lattice-Boltzmann simulations. The results show that MPPs can significantly enhance noise absorption and transmission loss, making them a promising solution for acoustic design in various industries.
