Abstract

The chapter delves into the traumatic history of Rwanda and Burundi, marked by repetitive ethnic wars and genocides. It focuses on how women writers in these countries use fiction to imaginatively represent nation-building and envision new ways of healing from these atrocities. The text argues that women's creative writing offers a powerful avenue for reorganizing memories of trauma and contributing to the peace process. It also examines the role of women in peace-building processes, highlighting their unique qualities and the need for their inclusion to achieve sustainable peace. The chapter discusses specific works by women writers, such as Toyi's 'Weep Not Refugee' and Combre's 'Broken Memory,' which serve as sites of memory and creative spaces for reimagining nationhood. These narratives help in healing individual traumas and fostering a sense of collective belonging, ultimately contributing to the emergence of a new national identity.
