Abstract

The chapter discusses the transformative potential of Industry 4.0 technologies in the architecture, energy, and construction sectors, focusing on the intersection of performance-oriented digital design and circular economy. It explores how digital tools like augmented reality, smart buildings, and IoT can optimize project design, construction, and maintenance. The authors analyze seven circular economy strategies—recover, recycle, reuse, regenerate, repurpose, reduce, rethink—and their impact on achieving SDGs 12 and 13. Through case studies, the chapter illustrates innovative projects that demonstrate the practical application of these strategies, showcasing how digital technologies can reduce waste, increase energy efficiency, and promote sustainable practices. The methodology involves a detailed review of Industry 4.0 technologies, including agile approaches, IIoT stacks, and technology ecosystems, and their role in enhancing circular economy strategies. The chapter also addresses the challenges and implications of digital transformation in the construction industry, emphasizing the need for value-driven approaches over technology-first solutions. By integrating these concepts, the chapter offers a holistic view of how digital design and circular economy can work together to achieve sustainable development goals.
