Abstract

This study investigates the potential of canola straw biochar, treated with phosphoric acid and iron chloride, for the adsorption of arsenic species As(III) and As(V). The research focuses on the effects of thermal treatment and FeCl3 concentration on the biochar's adsorption capacity, utilizing a full factorial design of experiments. Key findings include the identification of optimal conditions for arsenic adsorption, with the highest capacities observed at specific FeCl3 concentrations and thermal treatment temperatures. The study also characterizes the biochar using BET surface area analysis, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and SEM, providing insights into the physical and chemical changes induced by the treatments. Additionally, the research explores the impact of pH and temperature on adsorption efficiency, as well as the kinetic and isotherm modeling of the adsorption process. The results demonstrate that the treated biochar shows promising potential for arsenic removal, with adsorption capacities comparable to those reported in the literature. This comprehensive analysis offers valuable data for professionals seeking effective and sustainable solutions for arsenic remediation.
