Abstract

The article addresses the challenges of protecting meshed distribution networks with Distributed Generations (DGs) using Directional Overcurrent Relays (DOCRs). Traditional protection methods often fail due to the dynamic nature of these networks. The Dragonfly Algorithm (DA) is proposed as an effective optimization technique for adaptive DOCR coordination. The DA-based approach is compared with existing methods, demonstrating superior performance in minimizing overall operating times and maintaining coordination between primary and backup relays. The adaptive protection scheme is further validated through case studies on 6-bus and IEEE 14-bus systems, showing significant improvements in relay operating times with varying DG penetration levels.
