The combustion of even good quality gasoline can lead to deposit formation. Such deposits increase the engine out emissions and affect vehicle performance. Therefore the use of deposit control additives is recommended by the car manufacturers. For instance the average intake valve deposits should not be more than 30 mg (CEC F-05-A-93 test protocol) according to the World Wide Fuel Charter.End of the 1980s Kerocom® PIBA was launched as deposit control agent against intake valve deposits in PFI engines. The author will show the different type of chemistries which are in the market nowadays and will explain the benefit of clean intake valves in terms of improved fuel economy, lower emissions and better drivability.Due to the increasing number of direct injection engines there is an increasing demand for additives against injector fouling. Unfortunately, there is no standard test for injector cleanliness and results are based on in-house tests so far.Currently special booster molecules are developed to prevent deposit formation in the injectors of downsized gasoline direct injection engines.Special deposit control additives also prevent Common Rail diesel injectors from deposit formation (IDID) and help to lower emissions and fuel economy.
