In recent years, with the rapid development of pharmacochemistry and biomedical science, the need for biodegradable polymers to possess excellent biocompatibility increases steeply. Among the variety of synthetic biodegradable polymers, linear aliphatic polyesters, polylactic acid (PLA), polyglycolic acid (PGA) and related copolymers are particularly attractive and most widely used. These polymers have found many significant applications in the field of biomedical science as drug-delivery carriers, resorbable sutures, artificial-tissue materials and so forth.
