Abstract

This chapter delves into the transformative potential of nano-engineered cementitious composites, focusing on the integration of nanomaterials to enhance the properties and sustainability of cement composites. The study highlights the use of colloidal nanosilica (CNs) as a cost-effective and high-performance additive, demonstrating significant improvements in compressive strength and durability. Experimental results show that the optimal dosage of CNs is 0.75% by weight of cement, leading to a 26% increase in early strength and a modest gain in long-term strength. The text also compares the market prices of CNs composites with silica fume composites, revealing a 10.79% cost advantage for the former. Additionally, the chapter explores the microstructural changes induced by CNs, showing evidence of more hydrated products and fewer micro-cracks compared to ordinary cement composites. The conclusions emphasize the potential of nanomaterials like nanosilica to revolutionize the cement concrete composites industry, particularly in fast-track construction projects. The study also underscores the need for further research to fully understand and leverage the benefits of nano-enabled composites.
