Abstract

This chapter delves into the enhancement of JPEG compression by leveraging integer Discrete Tchebichef Transform (DTT) approximations and the development of a tailored quantisation matrix. The text begins by introducing the DTT and its advantages over traditional methods like the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). It then explores the energy distribution of integer DTT approximations and their impact on image compression efficiency. A key focus is the design of a quantisation matrix specifically adapted to integer DTT, which is shown to outperform existing matrices in terms of Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR). The chapter also discusses the implementation of the proposed quantisation matrix within the JPEG standard and presents experimental results that highlight its superior performance. The conclusion emphasizes the potential of integer DTT approximations in next-generation image compression techniques.
