Abstract

The chapter delves into the aeroacoustic effects of Wavy Leading Edge (WLE) on fan-rig SDT stators in turbofan engines. It begins by addressing the primary noise sources in aircraft engines, focusing on the significant role of fan noise in modern turbofan engines. The WLE, inspired by the physical characteristics of owl wings, is introduced as an effective noise reduction device. The performance of WLE is governed by parameters such as wavelength and amplitude, with broadband noise reduction being more sensitive to amplitude variations. The study explores the acoustic effects of WLE on the NACA 65 airfoil, demonstrating a reduction of up to 6 dB at 3 kHz without significant aerodynamic performance impacts. The experimental setup at the EESC/USP Rig-Fan bench is detailed, including the modifications made to the stator vanes and the testing procedures. The results show that WLE is more effective at lower rotational speeds, reducing sound radiation at low and medium frequencies while noting a slight increase in noise at high frequencies. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for further investigation into the geometry of serrations to mitigate high-frequency noise increases and the potential of WLE for reducing noise emissions during aircraft takeoff and landing.
