Aircraft component defect monitoring by the use of patch magnetostrictive EMAT

Abstracts

Health monitoring of crack initiation and growth is a major concern of aircraft inspection. The important part of health monitoring of structure is transducer installation and data acquisition. Electromagnetic acoustic transducer can be manufactured as a patch-type device and can generate and receive ultrasonic waves without a liquid coupling. Magnetostrictive patch type transducer is designed and manufactured to generate shear horizontal wave in the structures. The aircraft components such as bleed air duct and aircraft wing panel is monitored by the use of ultrasonic guided wave which is generated by patch type transducer. The tomographic algorithm is employed to visualize the monitored signal into quantitative image. The presented technique can be applied for the real time imaging of aircraft component monitoring.
