Abstract

This study delves into the effects of alcohol consumption on movement and egress in stadium emergencies, a critical yet under-researched area in fire engineering. By analyzing data from York University Stadium in Toronto, the research identifies a significant decrease in pedestrian movement speed post-alcohol consumption, with a conservative estimate of a 15% reduction and a maximum of 50%. The study also explores behavioral changes, such as altered wayfinding and increased queue congestion, during emergency egress. Additionally, it compares the impact of alcohol consumption on movement during normal circulation and high-motivation egress scenarios like rainstorms. The findings underscore the importance of considering alcohol consumption in fire safety design and evacuation planning for stadia. Furthermore, the research highlights the need for future studies to couple human behavior with structural stability in fire scenarios, providing a comprehensive understanding of safe egress in emergencies.
