Algorithm for Analysis of Road Surface Degradation

Abstract

The paper presents results obtained by the algorithm designed to analyze road surface degradation based on a 3D model. The model is generated from measured data collected by the mobile measurement platform. Results of the analysis help to estimate further development of different types of degradations of road surface such as cracks, pot-holes, rutting and shoving, deterioration, local deformations or beaten longitudinal tracks. The advantage of the solution is the knowledge of the precise GPS position coordinates of all defects identified in the road surface. Estimation of progress of further damaging process of road surface and the future state of its degradation then can be utilized for better determination of the time frame for road repairs. The proposed algorithm respects and considers regulations and procedures actually used by the Slovak Road Administration and applied for the road I and II classes as well as for motorways and expressways.
