Abstract

Disposable face masks, primarily made from polypropylene and other polymers, undergo significant physical and chemical changes when exposed to landfill conditions. This study investigates the aging process of these masks under simulated landfill leachate and UV radiation, revealing critical insights into their degradation. The research highlights how UV exposure accelerates the oxidation of mask layers, leading to surface abrasions and fractures. Masks aged in landfill leachate show a substantial reduction in tensile strength compared to those in DI water, indicating accelerated aging. The study also quantifies the release of microplastics and other pollutants, with higher concentrations observed in leachate due to increased plastic fractures. These findings underscore the environmental impact of disposable masks and the need for improved waste management strategies. The research provides a detailed analysis of the physicochemical alterations in masks, offering valuable data for future sustainability efforts in managing plastic waste.
