Abstract

The article introduces an innovative analytical model for evaluating volumetric strain in polymeric materials using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). Strain measurement is crucial for characterizing and monitoring composite structures in various industries such as aerospace, automotive, and consumer goods. THz-TDS offers non-destructive, high-resolution analysis of material properties. The model presented correlates the change in the time of arrival of terahertz pulses with volumetric strain, using an electrostriction model of polarizable material. This approach provides higher sensitivity and precision in strain mapping, particularly at lower strain levels. The model was validated through experiments on PDMS doped with strontium titanate particles, showing good agreement with digital image correlation (DIC) and finite element analysis (FEA) results. The study also addresses the challenges of stress relaxation and edge effects in strain measurements. The novel approach offers significant advancements in the field of non-destructive evaluation and strain measurement techniques.
