Abstract

This chapter delves into the analysis of commuters' transfer characteristics on public transportation networks, focusing on the use of smartcard data in environments where Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) data is available but Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) data is not. The study aims to identify commuters and distinguish 'true' transfers based on behavioral patterns derived from smartcard data. The authors propose a frequent patterns mining (FPM) method to identify transfers in commuting trips, highlighting the recurring nature of commuters' travel behaviors. The chapter presents a case study in Shenzhen, China, and discusses the reliability and implications of the identified transfer characteristics. The findings offer valuable insights into the efficiency and convenience of transfers within the public transportation system, with potential applications for improving urban mobility and transportation planning.
