Abstract

The article delves into the critical importance of cybersecurity and cryptology education for elementary students, who are increasingly navigating the digital world independently. It highlights the unique challenges faced by educators in informal learning environments, such as afterschool programs and summer camps, where resources and professional development opportunities may be limited. The study introduces an asynchronous online professional development (OPD) program designed to support educators in implementing a technology-enhanced cybersecurity and cryptology curriculum. The curriculum, titled CryptoComics, is a transmedia, blended learning program that combines digital games, unplugged activities, and a comic book to engage students in learning about cybersecurity and cryptology. The article explores the design of the OPD, which is informed by best practices in adult learning, asynchronous online courses, and the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework. It also presents case studies of two educators who utilized the OPD to prepare for curriculum implementation, providing insights into their experiences and the effectiveness of the program. The findings suggest that the OPD successfully prepared teachers to teach complex subjects, with a positive impact on their perceived preparedness and confidence. The article also discusses the challenges faced by educators in navigating the curriculum's structure and transitioning between its various components, highlighting the need for clear guidance and technical support. Overall, the article offers a comprehensive examination of the strategies and challenges involved in enhancing elementary cybersecurity and cryptology education in informal learning environments, making it a valuable resource for those seeking to improve their understanding of these critical subjects.
