Abstract

The chapter discusses the challenges of securing wireless communications in ubiquitous computing systems, particularly focusing on device-to-device (D2D) communication. It highlights the vulnerabilities in current protocols, such as the 3GPP standard, which is susceptible to attacks like IMSI catcher and de-synchronization. The authors propose a new, lightweight authentication and key agreement (AKA) protocol that uses symmetric key operations and avoids the high resource requirements of public key cryptosystems. The proposed protocol ensures mutual authentication, integrity, and confidentiality, while also providing security characteristics like unlinkability and key forward/backward secrecy. The chapter includes a detailed security analysis, formal proofs, and performance evaluations that demonstrate the protocol's efficiency and security advantages over existing solutions. The novel approach makes it particularly relevant for resource-constrained IoT devices in various applications, ensuring secure and efficient communication in ubiquitous computing environments.
