Abstract

The literature on mass ideology in the United States revolves around the conceptualization and measurement of political beliefs. While some argue for a single dimension of liberal to conservative, others suggest multiple dimensions are necessary. This article extends the literature by considering a wider range of ideological labels and their impact on political attitudes and vote choice. Using a large nonprobability sample of US adults, the study finds that alternative ideological labels are prevalent and reflect meaningful psychological commitments. These labels provide unique information about mass opinion and can significantly affect vote choice, comparable to candidate position-taking on salient issues. The findings suggest that measuring a wider range of ideological attachments can aid in mapping mass policy attitudes and understanding political behavior.
