Abstract

The article 'An Improved Problem Formulation for THD Minimization of Multilevel Inverters' delves into the optimization of multilevel inverters (MLIs) for reduced Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). MLIs are favored for their lower switching frequency and dynamic power loss, making them ideal for medium- and high-power applications. The study focuses on the common objective of achieving a staircase approximation of a voltage sine wave, controlled by the number of steps, step sizes, and switching angles. The authors introduce an improved problem formulation that minimizes THD while adhering to the IEEE-519-2022 standard, which sets upper bounds on THD and relative strength of individual harmonics. The proposed method uses a genetic algorithm to find optimal switching angles, ensuring the desired fundamental component and minimizing THD. The approach is validated through computational simulations and hardware implementation, achieving THD values as low as 1.47% for 15-level MLIs. The article highlights the advantages of the proposed method over previous works, including strict adherence to IEEE-519 standards and improved THD values.
