Abstract

This article presents an integrated glucose-insulin simulation model designed to understand normal meal interactions in Type 2 diabetes. The model employs a forcing function strategy to estimate parameters for various subsystems in both normal subjects and those with type 2 diabetes. Key topics include the development and validation of the model, the simulation of normal and diabetic meal responses, and the comparison of the model's performance with other methods. The results demonstrate the robustness of the model structure and its ability to quantitatively describe subjects with type 2 diabetes. The model's unique features, such as its detailed sub-models and the use of dietary data, make it a valuable simulator for various pathophysiological situations related to diabetes. The article concludes by highlighting the model's potential for future developments, including the consideration of counter-regulatory hormones and the variability between subjects.
