An Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Scheme for Carbon Footprint Reduction: Leveraging the Informal Sector in Hanoi

This study delves into the pivotal role of informal recycling in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions within Hanoi's municipal solid waste management system. By leveraging data from the JEAI Recycurbs Viet project and the Asia Low Carbon Society Research study, the research quantifies the carbon reduction potential of informal recycling activities. The study employs the ExSS/Waste model to compare scenarios with and without informal recycling, highlighting significant emission reductions and socio-economic benefits. Key findings include the diversion of recyclable materials from landfills, reduced reliance on virgin resource extraction, and improved livelihoods for informal waste collectors. The study also emphasizes the importance of integrating informal recycling into formal waste management systems and provides policy recommendations for low-carbon waste management strategies. Additionally, the research explores the challenges and opportunities in Vietnam's waste management sector, particularly in relation to plastic waste and the informal recycling sector. The study's interdisciplinary approach and practical recommendations make it a valuable resource for professionals seeking to enhance waste management practices and reduce carbon footprints in urban environments.
