Abstract

This chapter delves into the occurrence of rare earth elements (REEs) at the Kennecott Copper Operation, a world-class Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposit located in Utah. The investigation focuses on the potential for recovering REEs as a byproduct, given the critical role these elements play in energy and defense technologies. The study analyzes historic drill core assay data to characterize the presence and distribution of REEs by rock type, with a particular emphasis on monzonite, which shows the highest concentrations. Mineralogical investigations reveal the presence of REE-bearing minerals such as allanite, monazite, synchysite, chevkinite, and xenotime, with allanite being the most abundant but having the lowest REE grade. The text discusses the liberation and particle size of these minerals, highlighting the challenges and potential strategies for their separation and recovery. Initial processing implications and recommendations are provided, emphasizing the need for tailored steps for each target mineral. The chapter concludes that while the overall grade of REEs in the Kennecott orebody is low, intrusive rock types show elevated concentrations, making it a potential domestic source of these critical metals.
