An investigation of the effect of auxiliary pins on mechanical properties of friction stir welded AA2024-T351

Abstract

The study focuses on the impact of auxiliary pins in friction stir welding (FSW) of AA2024-T351 aluminum alloy, a high-strength material used in the aerospace and automotive industries. It explores how different tool geometries, including single and double auxiliary pins, affect mechanical properties, microstructure, and hardness. The research highlights that tools with one auxiliary pin significantly improve tensile strength and ductility, while two auxiliary pins lead to uncontrolled plastic flow and decreased mechanical properties. Numerical simulations validate the experimental results, showing that optimizing tool geometry can enhance heat generation and material mixing, leading to stronger welds. The study concludes that auxiliary pins can optimize FSW processes, but their design and positioning must be carefully controlled to avoid defects and maximize weld quality.
