Abstract

The chapter focuses on the analysis of superelastic NiTi blade-type springs, examining the influence of manufacturing processes and heat treatments on their properties. It begins by introducing the concept of smart materials and their applications, with a particular focus on Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) and their unique properties such as shape memory effect and superelasticity. The methodology involves the manufacturing of C-shaped LMF-SE blade-type springs, including heat treatments and shape setting, followed by characterization of transformation temperatures, mechanical properties, and material damping. The results show that the final austenite temperature can be reduced to near room temperature, enabling the activation of the superelastic effect without external heating. The tensile test reveals higher mechanical strength and hysteresis damping potential compared to previous studies. The use of the System for Material Damping Estimation (SEAM) demonstrates the high damping capacity and reduced system amplitude of the manufactured springs. Overall, the chapter highlights the potential of these springs for applications in rotating systems due to their improved mechanical properties and damping capabilities.
