Abstract

This chapter delves into the analysis of adaptive reuse models for abandoned built heritage in small inland towns, focusing on their strengths, challenges, and opportunities. Six key models are examined: Adaptive Reuse Potential (ARP), Integrated Conservation and Urban Regeneration (IconCUR), Circular Economy-Based Models, Campbell’s Planner’s Triangle, Historic Urban Landscape (HUL), and Cultural Heritage Counts for Europe (CHCFE). The analysis highlights the importance of flexibility, adaptability, and community involvement in successful adaptive reuse projects. Two case studies are presented: the restoration of the former Convent of Santa Maria d’Orsoleo in Sant’Arcangelo, Italy, and the adaptive reuse of the rural village of Genalguacil in Andalusia, Spain. These case studies illustrate the potential of adaptive reuse to revitalize marginalized areas and promote sustainable development. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the role of multi-level governance, social capital, and the balance between conservation and innovation in ensuring the long-term success of adaptive reuse projects.
