Abstract

This study delves into the pressing need for sustainable alternatives to diesel fuel in mining trucks, focusing on liquefied natural gas, renewable diesel, and electric batteries. Using real mining data and discrete event simulation, it evaluates the operational, environmental, and economic impacts of these alternatives. The results reveal that while battery-powered trucks offer the most significant emissions reductions, they face logistical barriers. Renewable diesel emerges as a practical transitional solution, achieving substantial emissions reductions with minimal disruption. Liquefied natural gas, once considered a cleaner alternative, demonstrates limited environmental benefits and higher costs. The study also highlights the need for further research and infrastructure investments to support the widespread adoption of these technologies. By comparing these alternatives, the research provides valuable insights for the mining industry's transition to sustainable energy sources.
