Abstract

The chapter begins by examining the regulatory landscape, including the European Parliament's measures to decouple economic growth from CO2 emissions and the introduction of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) in maritime transport. It underscores the need for standardized emissions accounting across the logistics chain, facilitated by the ISO 14083:2023 standard. This standard provides comprehensive guidelines for quantifying and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from various transport modes and hub operations, with a particular focus on port terminals. The analysis delves into the methodological framework for calculating GHG emissions, emphasizing the importance of accurate data collection and the allocation of emissions to specific technological processes. The chapter also explores the practical implications of these methodologies, using a case study of a multipurpose cargo terminal in Klaipėda seaport to illustrate the assessment of GHG emissions and the identification of ecologically inefficient equipment. It concludes by discussing strategies for enhancing ecological efficiency, including technological modernization, better planning, and operational optimization, and highlights the need for further research to implement standard requirements in specific technological activities of seaport terminals.
