Abstract

The chapter delves into the analysis of mechanical properties and environmental effects on composite sandwich structures by varying the face sheet thickness. It begins with an introduction to composite structures and their increasing use in industries due to their favorable weight-to-stiffness ratio. The literature review highlights previous studies on composite sandwich panels, focusing on the effects of varying core and face sheet materials. The methodology involves using carbon fiber as the face sheet material with varying thicknesses and Nomex™ as the core material. Experimental work includes fabricating composite sandwich panels and conducting tests such as flat-wise compression, three-point bending, water absorption, acid attack resistance, and soil degradation. The results and discussion section presents detailed findings from these tests, showing how varying face sheet thickness affects compression strength, deflection, water absorption, acid resistance, and soil degradation.
