Abstract

The chapter explores the pressing need for environmentally friendly rail transport solutions, driven by stringent emission regulations. It contrasts the conventional diesel-electric multiple-units (DEMUs) with a modern alternative: hydrogen fuel cell powertrains. The study employs advanced multibody simulation models to analyze the dynamic behavior of these vehicles on real railway tracks, focusing on vertical and lateral wheel forces, and derailment quotients. The findings reveal that while hydrogen powertrains offer significant environmental benefits, they also present unique challenges, particularly in terms of weight distribution and axle load. The chapter underscores the importance of optimizing hydrogen powertrain components and their placement within the vehicle to ensure safe and efficient operation. It also highlights the safety of hydrogen-powered multiple-units from a derailment perspective, providing a comprehensive overview of the advantages and considerations of adopting hydrogen technology in rail transport.
