Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical analysis of slope stability for hill-based construction in Guwahati, India, a city prone to landslides due to its mountainous terrain. The study identifies key factors such as geology, topography, land use changes, and climate, particularly the impact of monsoon rains, as significant contributors to slope instability. Through detailed laboratory investigations, the chapter characterizes the hill soils, determining their physical and engineering properties. The Morgenstern-Price method is employed for slope stability analysis, revealing that undisturbed soils offer significantly higher stability than remoulded samples. The chapter highlights the importance of slope geometry and in situ soil conditions in determining the likelihood of landslides, providing valuable insights for engineers and geologists to design effective slope stabilization measures.
