Abstract

This chapter delves into the analysis of discharge currents in 10 kV lightning arresters, focusing on three primary types of lightning strikes: shielding failure, back flashover, and induced lightning. Through electromagnetic transient simulations, the study examines the discharge current waveforms under these different conditions, highlighting the unique characteristics and monitoring capabilities for each. The research reveals that shielding failure allows for monitoring of half the overhead transmission line, back flashover is limited to the vicinity of the terminal tower, and induced lightning can be monitored across the entire line. The study also explores how the front time and time to half value of the discharge current vary with the location and amplitude of the lightning strike. The conclusions drawn from this analysis provide critical insights into the effectiveness of lightning arresters and their role in protecting critical equipment in distribution networks. This detailed examination offers a comprehensive understanding of the behavior of lightning arresters under various lightning strike conditions, making it an essential read for professionals seeking to enhance their knowledge of lightning protection in power systems.
