This chapter explores the dynamics of traffic congestion in Quito, Ecuador, and proposes a low-cost Big Data application to collect, process, and visualize real-time traffic information. The study focuses on using Twitter data alongside traditional sensor data to detect and manage traffic congestion effectively. The research methodology includes field surveys, sentiment analysis of Twitter data, and correlation analysis between sensor and social media data. Key findings indicate a strong correlation between Twitter data and sensor data, demonstrating the viability of social media as a tool for traffic monitoring. The study also highlights the spatial coverage of Twitter data, which in many cases exceeds that of traditional sensors. The conclusions emphasize the relevance of integrating Big Data tools and social media analytics in urban traffic management strategies.
