Abstract

This study delves into the potential of inland water transport (IWT) as a sustainable urban mobility solution, with a focus on the city of Kochi, India. By employing the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), the research predicts customer patronage and identifies key factors influencing mode choice. The study reveals that comfort and convenience are the most significant factors, followed by safety and accessibility. Additionally, the research highlights the importance of considering sociodemographic features in policy-making to encourage a shift from private to public transportation. The study also provides insights into the challenges and opportunities of implementing IWT in an urban context, offering valuable lessons for other cities with similar terrain and demographics.
