Abstract

Earthquakes remain one of the most devastating natural disasters, causing significant loss of life and economic damage. This chapter explores the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in predicting earthquakes, with a particular focus on Turkey, a region prone to seismic activity due to its location between the Eurasian and Arabian tectonic plates. The study analyzes the effectiveness of various AI models, including backpropagation neural networks (BPNN) and linear regression (LR), in predicting earthquake magnitudes and locations. The chapter provides a detailed comparison of these models, highlighting their accuracies and the key metrics used for evaluation, such as accuracy, R2 Score, and Mean Squared Error (MSE). It also delves into the historical context of earthquakes in Turkey, including the devastating events of February 6, 2023, and the challenges faced in implementing early-warning systems. The analysis reveals that the BPNN model outperforms other models, achieving an accuracy of 96.8%, making it a promising tool for enhancing disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies. The chapter concludes with insights into future research directions, emphasizing the need for continued innovation in AI algorithms to improve earthquake prediction and save lives.
