Abstract

The article delves into the transformative experiences (TE) of students in anatomy and physiology courses, examining how these experiences intersect with their everyday lives. It introduces the concept of TE, which involves students applying course content to their daily experiences, expanding their perceptions, and finding personal value in their learning. The study employs epistemic network analysis (ENA) to analyze student reflections, revealing the complex relationships between TE, learning motivation constructs, and various dimensions of students' lives. Key findings include the frequent occurrence of expansion of perception (EP) and triggered interest in student reflections, highlighting the potential of anatomy and physiology courses to foster transformative learning. The article also explores the connections between TE and different microsystems, such as family, career, and personal experiences, providing insights into how students integrate course content into their lives. Additionally, the study discusses the utility of ENA in analyzing student writing, offering a novel approach to understanding the cognitive processes and connections students make. The research concludes by suggesting strategies for instructors to promote TE in their courses, emphasizing the importance of leveraging students' existing motivations and experiences.
