Dr. Angang Hu and his colleagues’ book entitled, Xi Jinping’s New Development Philosophy, addresses some key debates relating to China’s opening up policies, socialism and development stages. Concisely and elegantly written, the authors mainly focus on seven key concepts of development: people-centered development idea; innovative development; coordinated development; green development; open development; shared development; and security development. This rich study offers many important insights on the effectiveness of China’s new development philosophy, and how Chinese leaders in different periods pursue the same principles and goals to “fully mobilize all positive factors” and transform the disharmony to harmony (p.43). Furthermore, the authors integrate the main argument with China’s three generations of development namely, traditional periods of “planned economy” (1950–1978), “economic transition period” (1978–2002), and the period of “new development concept strategy” especially represented by “scientific development concept (2002- present). Furthermore, the authors highlight the similarities and differences between the aforementioned generations, which deepens our understanding of the evolution of Chinese development (p.137). …
