Abstract

The article delves into the philosophical perspective on the rationality and conceptuality of non-human animals and human infants, comparing it to human adults. It begins with Susan Carey’s seminal account of the origin of concepts, which posits that both human infants and non-human animals possess core cognitive systems that enable a form of rationality called 'core cognitive inferentiality'. The author then critiques Carey’s account, arguing that it fails to capture the full depth and complexity of human adult conceptuality. The article highlights the profound differences between the rationality of infants and non-human animals and that of human adults, emphasizing the need for a richer, Kantian-inspired notion of conceptuality. This notion, which includes features like judgmental character, sensitivity to reasons, and self-consciousness, is essential for understanding the sophisticated cognitive level of human adults. The author concludes by suggesting a methodology called heterophenomenology for empirically approaching this Kantian-inspired notion of rationality-cum-conceptuality, making the article a compelling read for those interested in the philosophical underpinnings of cognitive development.
