Abstract

The mechanical properties of SC-15 epoxy can be significantly enhanced when reinforced with nanofillers. In this study, SC-15 epoxy is loaded with iron oxide nanoparticles and chemically functionalized single-wall carbon nanotubes and cured in a modest magnetic field. Magnetic analysis shows that the iron oxide nanoparticles flocculate to form chains and create a structural anisotropy in the system. Measurements of tensile strength, tensile modulus, and compressive strength in orientations both parallel and perpendicular to the curing field demonstrate an anisotropy in mechanical properties as well, even though there are enhanced properties in all directions. Finally, thermal properties analysis shows that there is a modest shift in the glass transition temperature due to particle inclusion and magnetic flocculation.
