Abstract

This chapter explores the application of the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm for segmenting multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions in MRI brain images. The study focuses on optimizing the ACO algorithm's parameters to achieve accurate and reliable segmentation results. It compares the performance of ACO with other segmentation techniques, such as fuzzy partitioning, genetic algorithms, and K-Means, highlighting the advantages of ACO in terms of flexibility and optimization of different criteria. The chapter also discusses the challenges and limitations of MS lesion segmentation, emphasizing the importance of early detection and accurate diagnosis. The results demonstrate that the optimized ACO algorithm can effectively identify MS lesions, with a Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of up to 0.86, indicating a high degree of similarity with the consensus segmentation. The study concludes that further improvements in the proposed treatment algorithms are needed to enhance the detection of very small lesions and facilitate early diagnosis of MS.
