Abstract

Traffic-induced pollution has reached alarming levels, necessitating effective traffic noise prediction (TNP) models. This chapter investigates the suitability of the CoRTN model, widely used in metropolitan areas, for Indian road conditions. The study focuses on Varanasi, a city with a mix of local and religious traffic, and compares noise levels on national highways (NH) and city roads. Key findings reveal that city roads exhibit higher noise levels due to heterogeneous traffic flow, frequent honking, and lack of proper parking. The CoRTN model, designed for homogeneous traffic, underperforms in city roads, highlighting the need for a model that accounts for honking and heterogeneous traffic conditions. The chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of traffic flow characterization, noise level measurements, and the model's predictive accuracy, offering valuable insights for urban planners and environmental consultants.
