Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of two-wheeler-specific features in dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) frameworks, highlighting their significance in traffic control and transport planning. Traditional traffic flow theories often overlook the unique maneuverability and gap-filling behaviors of two-wheelers, which can significantly impact travel times and traffic dynamics. The chapter presents a multi-class DTA framework that incorporates class-specific travel time variations, demonstrating its potential through two key applications: optimizing signal settings at intersections and determining the optimal placement of wireless charging lanes for electric two-wheelers. The first application focuses on the Combined Dynamic Traffic Assignment and Control (CDTAC) problem, where the framework is used to find optimal signal settings based on routing behavior. The second application addresses the strategic planning of dynamic wireless charging (DWC) lanes, considering factors such as the state of charge of electric two-wheelers and the proportion of two-wheelers on different routes. Through detailed algorithms and experiments on test networks, the chapter illustrates how the proposed framework can enhance traffic management and infrastructure planning, offering a comprehensive approach to addressing the complexities of modern urban traffic conditions.
