Abstract

The chapter explores the applicability of design guidelines for injection-molded snap joints to additive manufacturing. It begins by highlighting the increased demand for rapid prototyping in industries with shortened product lifecycles. The authors delve into the basic concepts and types of snap joints, emphasizing the cantilever snap joint as the most common form. They discuss the limitations of current design guidelines, which are primarily focused on injection-molded parts, and the need for their applicability in additive manufacturing. The methodology involves manufacturing snap joints from different materials using various printing technologies and testing their assembly forces. The results are compared with theoretically calculated and simulated forces, revealing discrepancies that challenge the applicability of existing guidelines. The chapter concludes with recommendations for future research to bridge the gap between additive manufacturing and large-scale manufacturing, emphasizing the need for more accurate secant moduli for specific materials.
