Abstract

This article introduces a cutting-edge, lightweight assistive feeding system designed to support individuals with physical disabilities, enhancing their autonomy during mealtimes. The system leverages a pruned YOLOv5n model for real-time mouth detection, ensuring accurate and adaptive feeding trajectories. Key topics include the development of a lightweight, low-cost vision-guided system, the integration of RGB-D sensing for 3D mouth localization, and a two-stage adaptive feeding strategy that combines demonstration-based scooping with safe, smooth delivery. The article also discusses the system's modular hardware architecture, the pruning process of the YOLOv5n model, and the experimental results that validate its effectiveness. Notably, the system achieves high detection accuracy with reduced computational overhead, making it suitable for edge deployment. The conclusion highlights the system's potential to improve user comfort and caregiver workload, paving the way for practical deployment in real-world scenarios.
