Abstract

Soil erosion, a critical environmental issue, poses significant threats to soil fertility, water quality, and ecosystem health. This chapter explores the application of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) integrated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map soil erosion susceptibility in the Upper Blue Nile River Basin, Ethiopia. The study identifies and analyzes key environmental factors such as drainage density, slope, elevation, precipitation, soil type, lineament density, and land use/cover, which significantly influence soil erosion processes. By employing advanced spatial analysis techniques, the research generates a comprehensive soil erosion susceptibility map, dividing the region into low, medium, and high susceptibility zones. The findings highlight areas requiring immediate conservation efforts, such as terracing, reforestation, and sustainable land management practices. The chapter also validates the model's accuracy using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve and Area Under the Curve (AUC) analysis, demonstrating the reliability of the MCDA-GIS approach. Furthermore, the study provides actionable insights and recommendations for policymakers and land managers to implement effective soil conservation strategies, ensuring the sustainable management of soil and water resources in the Upper Blue Nile River Basin.
