43. Application of SAPPhIRE Model of Causality in the Design of Product-Service Systems

Abstract

With the increasing adoption of ‘servitization’ under fierce competition and by the influence of Industry 4.0, manufacturers are increasingly moving away from designing technical products as offerings to designing product-service systems (PSS) as offerings. The SAPPhIRE model of causality can represent biological and technical systems and be able to explain their behavior. It is useful in many product design activities like analysis and synthesis and can be used in assessing the design novelty of a product. This paper presents an understanding of representations used in PSS design from literature and how the SAPPhIRE model can represent a PSS in design. We have shown that the SAPPhIRE model can capture the causality of product and service combinations and can be used to analyze an existing PSS configuration or synthesize a new one.
